A Captain James Cook statue and a Queen Victoria monument in Melbourne have been vandalised right before Australia Day on January 26th. The holiday marks the start of the colonial era as it’s the anniversary of the arrival of Britain’s First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. Victoria Police described what happened as “criminal damage” and that “the [Cook] statue was sawn off at the ankles”. It also said “several people were seen loitering in the area around the time of the incident.” | VICE News
